It works much slower than calcium chloride and only melts snow and ice in temperatures down to 12 degrees fahrenheit. De icers should not be used on new concrete wait until it is at least one year old and it has been treated with a sealer to reduce the amount of salt that can penetrate the surface. It is widely considered one of the more environmentally sound deicers. Magnesium chloride is works well in temperatures as low as 5 f and is safe for concrete.

The only real benefit to using magnesium chloride over calcium chloride is that magnesium chloride is safer for vegetation. It is 100 percent calcium magnesium acetate safe for new concrete and it does work. Avoid any deicing chemical the first winter.

This concrete deicer is non corrosive and friendly to plant life. Never use deicers containing ammonium sulphate or ammonium nitrate. It is safer to use on concrete that contains rebar or wire mesh.
